Welcome to the blog for Pigtail Pals, our mission is to “Redefine Girly” and teach girls they can define for themselves who they will be in this world. (You can learn more about the company Pigtail Pals here).
I want a more healthy, well-rounded childhood for my daughter. For that matter, I want the same thing for my son. My children deserve better. As do yours.
This place is for us, parents and others who care about children and the world they are growing up in. Let’s change the way we look at childhood. Let’s stop the gender divison, binary stereotypes, and hypersexulization. Let’s come together and create a more healthy atmosphere in which to raise our children.
Things need to change. We have legislation to get harmful plastics, lead paint, and such away from our children. Now we need to remove harmful, inappropriate, and confusing sexual messages and marketing in childhood. As parents, we have the responsibility to do this for our children.
Stories need to be shared. All too often this generation of parents is letting the media and marketers tell stories to our children. This is the place for us to share the stories. What are your challenges as a parent who disagrees with some of the products being sold to our kids? What are your stories from raising your children? What do you want your children to know about the stories our your life, the lives of family members that redefined who they were in this world? What does your son or daughter have to say about their world? And what would you like to say to the apparel and toy manufacturers who are trying to take your voice?
I’ve got a lot to say about all of this. But this is our place. Let the sharing begin.

Congratulations on joining the blogosphere, Melissa!
For the most part, I have tried to keep my kids away from advertising that’s in mainstream media by just not having it accessible. I know the time will come when they find it some other way, but I hope that when that happens, they will be old enough that we can have a rational talk about it.
I’ve enjoyed your tweets and look forward to reading more of your thoughts on this blog.

I’m an official lurker, but today I wanted to come out of the ‘woodwork’ so to speak to say how much I love this blog. You do such amazing stuff here, and as the mother of a 12-year-old you help me keep me sane.
Happy One Year anniversary- here’s to many, many more.
